The American Dream is to Rent

Joseph Coupal - Saturday, January 14, 2012

America is headed toward a future in which fewer people own their homes. The effective homeownership rate stands at 62% percent, according to a 2010 report by the New York Federal Reserve.

As more people move from owning to renting, apartment vacancy rates have fallen fast, from 8 percent in 2009 to 5.6 percent in third quarter 2011. Apartments in Lexington Park and all over Southern Maryland are not exception.

Those trends are just the beginning, the US is becoming a nation of renters and home ownership will keep falling. And some experts say that could be good for the country.

This dramatic change, triggered by the 2008 housing collapse, has shifted people’s views of home ownership. The number of those who consider a home a safe investment fell from 83% in 2003 to 66% this year, according to a survey by Fannie Mae. In another poll last April, 40% of renters questioned said they plan never to buy a home. Another reason for this is that many baby boom retirees don’t want the burden of home repairs, rising property taxes and other responsibilities.

Good Luck Food for the New Year

Joseph Coupal - Friday, December 30, 2011

It is the New Year, and for the residents of our apartments in Lexington Park, MD this is the perfect time to get a fresh start. New Year’s Resolutions are the topics of conversation this time of year. But food may certainly give you a leg up in the luck department.

There are quite a few foods that are believed to be lucky and to improve the odds that next year will be a great one. What is interesting is that all over the world the foods eaten on New Year’s Eve consist of the same major categories: grapes, greens, fish, pork, legumes, and cakes.

Grapes
New Year's revelers in Spain consume twelve grapes at midnight—one grape for each stroke of the clock.

Cooked Greens
Cooked greens, including cabbage, collards, kale, and chard, are consumed at New Year's in different countries for a simple reason — their green leaves look like folded money, and are thus symbolic of economic fortune.

Legumes
Legumes including beans, peas, and lentils are also symbolic of money. Their small, seed-like appearance resembles coins that swell when cooked so they are consumed with financial rewards in mind.

In Italy, it's customary to eat cotechino con lenticchie or sausages and green lentils, just after midnight

In the Southern United States, it's traditional to eat black-eyed peas or cowpeas in a dish called hoppin' john.

Pork
The custom of eating pork on New Year's is based on the idea that pigs symbolize progress.

Fish
Cod has been a popular feast food since the Middle Ages. The Danish eat boiled cod, in Italy, baccalà, or dried salt cod, is enjoyed from Christmas through New Year's; herring is consumed at midnight in Poland and Germany; the Swedish New Year feast is usually a smorgasbord with a variety of fish dishes such as seafood salad. In Japan, herring roe is consumed for fertility, shrimp for long life, and dried sardines for a good harvest

Cakes
Round or ring-shaped baked goods have special emphasis at New Year’s.

If you are looking for a recipe to bring to a New Year’s Eve party in Lexington Park or somewhere else in Southern Maryland this weekend, bring some food with luck! Happy New Year from Abberly Crest Apartment Homes.

Joseph Coupal - Friday, February 04, 2011

bathroom-Decor

Do you want to turn you bathroom into a space you love? All you need is a little inspiration and can turn your bathroom into a room of sophistication and elegance, a seaside dream, and more. Decorating your bathroom is relatively inexpensive and easy to do. Choose a décor style that you love and that welcomes your guests. Follow the tips below to complete the job.

Once you have chosen your décor style everything else that you purchase for your bathroom should put an emphasis on that style as well as the colors you chose to deliver that décor style. The first item you should purchase is your shower curtain. Your shower curtain is the first thing people are going to notice when they enter your bathroom so you want to decorate around it. Next add bathroom accessories such as a trash can, toothbrush holder, a tray, a kleenex holder, and a soap dispenser that emphasizes your décor style. And of course you cannot forget snug rugs.

    Candy-Apple

How To Make Peanut Butter Crunch Candy Apples

  • 6 Granny Smith apples
  • 6 wooden sticks
  • 1 (14 ounce) package individually wrapped caramels, unwrapped
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3 cups chopped peanut butter filled sandwich cookies
  • 4 ounces milk chocolate, chopped
  • 4 ounces white chocolate, chopped
  • Instructions

    1. Insert wooden sticks 3/4 of the way into the stem end of each apple. Place apples on a cookie sheet covered with lightly greased aluminum foil.
    2. Combine caramels and water in a saucepan over low heat. Cook, stirring often, until caramel melts and is smooth. Stir in the vanilla. Dip each apple into the caramel and gently run apples around insides of saucepan to scrape off some of the caramel. Scrape excess caramel from the apple bottoms using the side of the saucepan.
    3. Spread the chopped cookies out on a dinner plate. Roll caramel apples in the cookies and place on the aluminum foil. Place the milk chocolate and white chocolate into separate microwave-safe bowls. Heat in the microwave at 30 second intervals, stirring between each, until melted and smooth. Drizzle milk chocolate over the apples, then drizzle the white chocolate over the milk chocolate. Refrigerate until ready to serve.
